Clean Eating für Hunde / Clean eating for dogs

Did you know that dogs can eat clean too? As we adopted Mini about a year ago (wow, time flies!) I was thinking a lot about what to feed her. I didn’t like dog food tins at all and dry food is well, dry… too dry for my liking and so I found Barfing! It means „Bones and raw food“ (although there are different variations of this abbreviation), and today I’ll tell you what it is.

The pretty, colourful ads with all the happy dogs try to make us believe that THEIR food is the best for our dogs – naturally, without sugar, without grains, whatever trend they take and merchandise. When you tell someone that you feed your dog raw meat you don’t always get positive reactions. „A dog is no wolf“, „Raw meat is unhealthy and has lots of bacteria“ etc.

Was genau ist Barfen? / What exactly is Barf?

Althoug this is only half of the truth, as the dog not only eats raw meat but raw food in general – like veggies, fruit, eggs, salad, bones – and meat. Everything raw, as a wolf (from which the dog originates) doesn’t get cooked chicken either. Additionally heating destroys some structures in the meat so that lots of valuable nutrients get lost for the dog.

Wieso sollte man diese Fütterungsmethode in Betracht ziehen?
Why should you consider barfing your dog?

One can actually observe really good that pets are getting sicker, just like the people. They develop strange diseases, for example get food allergies and die much earlier. These facts have been linked to food a long time ago already, nowadays there are even lots of studies proving it. Industrial petfood was developed after World War II, there was not enough meat and so cheaper ingredients were used, mainly grains. Even today, a large part of the animal food is from grains, although no one is starving in developed countries.

But the dog originates from the wolf and is a carnivore – even if its domesticated now, he still is a carnivore!

With barfing you can also respond to the individual animal – if it can’t digest something that good it just doesn’t get it anymore. If its too fat it just gets less carbs and more protein and veggies.

Weitere Vorteile: / Other advantages:

the dog smells betterit can digest this kind of food much better and doesn’t have any deposits of preservatives and additives in the body – thus the dog is also less interesting for flee and ticks!
no dental calculus and bad breath anymore eating bones cleans the teeth and less dental calculus forms, the most common cause of bad breath
minimal defecationmany dogs who eat conventional food often poop 3 times a day. This is not normal, mostly this is more than they’ve eaten, just lots of fiber and fillers which expand in the gut, not much to use for the body. With barfing the dog’s body can really use a lot more of what he has eaten and he poops less. Says a lot right? (In addition, the poop does not stink as much, this is really incredible!)
Variation for the dog – sure, you can also vary a bit with tin food, but lets be honest, its all very equal. With barfing you have a lot more variety.

Ist Barfen nicht teuer? / Isn’t it expensive?

That was one of the few prejudices I actually believed at the beginning. Depending on the size of the dog it needs a different amount, but that’s the same way with canned food. We buy our raw meat mostly at Loys, a special dog butcher in Vienna. It comes packed in 500g or 1kg packs and can be conveniently stored. There is also cooked meat or  „Ready To Eat“ glasses (cooked meat with veggies and some grains), lots of snacks and treats (pig ears, etc. – all without salt and other additives) …

I’ll give you a detailed info about how much it costs us another time, in the second part of my „Clean Eating for dogs“. This will also contain information about what to feed exactly, how much etc.

My dog likes it and we do too! What is your opinion on this? Maybe you are barfing your dog too?
