Der große Fondanttest / The great fondant test

Hi!!!

How are you? Is everyone fit today? 😉 I am, although it was a long weekend, it was the bachelorette party of my friend!! It was a lot of fun and obviously I brought cake!! The recipe is coming up soon, but I have a teaser for you already:

I decorated the cake with fondant and as I owe you the great fondant test anyway I’ll post that today!!! Some of you already know that I’ll bake my own wedding cake and therefore already did some test runs. There have been some flops already on the way to my perfect cake, especially when it comes to ingredients. Below are my thoughts about 3 different types of fondant.

1. Marshmallow Fondant

First up the marshmallow fondant, which I used already to decorate the Halloween Cake. The fondant is selfmade and its easy, you can buy the ingredients in every store and it tastes great. You can find the recipe here.

Pro

  • einfach gemacht (obwohl auch sehr klebrig, siehe Bild unten ;-)) / easy to make (although very sticky, see pic below ;-))
  • Zutaten überall erhältlich / easy ingredients
  • lecker / yummy

Con

it doesn’t hold the shape very good – which was a great con IMO (but maybe I did something wrong?)

2. Selbstgemachtes Fondant / selfmade „fancy“ fondant

As the marshmallow fondant didn’t stay in shape like I wanted it to I tried something else. The recipe is from the Tortentante and can be found here.

Pro

  • lässt sich gut verarbeiten / good to work with
  • sieht schöner aus als das Marshmallow Fondant (irgendwie feiner) / looks better than the marshmallow fondant (kind of smoother)
  • schmeckt ganz gut (irgendwie zitronig) / tastes good (somehow lemony)

Con

  • man braucht viele Zutaten die man nicht mal eben daheim hat (aber gut in Spezialgeschäften bekommt) – klappt aber nur wenn man sich akribisch ans Rezept hält (siehe die vielen Kommentare am Tortentante-Blog) / you need a lot of fancy ingredients from special shops and it only works if you follow the recipe to the t (as you can read on the Tortentante-Blog)
  • die Herstellung ist sehr klebrig und aufwändig (siehe wieder Foto unten) / making it is a mess (see again pic below)
  • beim Einfärben muss man sehr aufpassen was man für Farben nimmt (flüßig, Pulver…), bei mir hat sich die Konsistenz jedes Mal anders entwickelt und teilweise konnte ich es dann nicht mehr verwenden / you have to be careful which colours you use (liquid, powder…), as the texture changes (and I couldn’t use the fondant after colouring it sometimes)

3. Rollfondant von Regalice / Fondant from Regalice

After I spent a lot of time trying fondants and failing Max said: why don’t you buy it? (I think he was tired of scraping fondant from my fingers ;-)) Hm, why not? Because I like making things on my own…but is it really worth it this time? So I bought some fondant from Regalice and never regretted it!!

Pro

  • lässt sich gut verarbeiten und behält die Form / great to work with and holds the shape
  • schmeckt supergut / tastes great
  • schaut gut aus, sehr glatt / looks great, really smooth

Con

maybe the price? Obviously its a bit more expensive than making your own, but if I count the time and the my nerves…for me its definitely worth it!

You can see the different types on the picture above: the purple and green is number 1 and the white one is the bought one (3). (You can see number 2 on the picture at the beginning of the post, the white one on the smallest top cake)

So for our wedding cake its decided: I’ll buy the fondant!! 😉 I can’t speak about other types, but I like the Regalice a lot.

Did you ever make fondant? Do you eat it with the wedding cakes or do you leave it on the plate?
