Race Recap: Spartan Sprint in Tirol

I’m on my way home from my first Spartan Race – the sprint in Tyrol! I always wanted to do such an obstacle race, I even was registered for one, but unfortunately was sick on the start day. So when Kristin did a giveaway for a start at the Spartan Race in spring I entered without thinking – and won! The race should have been only a few weeks later and it was a bit too soon for me – going to Germany was just not possible, as I still nursed Oliver. Reebok was so nice to prolong my voucher and I could start now in Tyrol! Going there is a bit shorter (although still long ;-)) and as I weaned Oliver finally (more on that soon) it was good timing.

So I jumped crawled in the train on race day at 6:30 am, tired and nervous. After 5 hours and one train change I got off the train in Oberndorf and was overwhelmed, it was so nice! Mountains, blue sky, endless lawns, cows…and right in the middle a hoard of Spartans! I moved in my room and slept for 2h. Afterwards I was a bit more refreshed, although still not in top form. Which made me even more unsure if I can do the race – 5km+, I didn’t know how much it really would be, and which obstacles would wait for me. I didn’t think a lot about the obstacles, more about the penalty if I can’t do them: 30 burpees! I trained them a lot, can do about 10 with a real pushup, the others on my knees. (People in my neighborhood know me as the crazy lady who jumps right on the sidewalk ;-))

When I came to the festival area I soon was drawn in by the good vibes of the other racers and the audience. I had enough time so I strolled around and got even more nervous, when I saw all the obstacles right before the finish line: a high wood wall; barbwire, stretched shortly above ground, where one had to crawl through mud; ropes to climb on; a net to climb; some mud hills with goits in between; tunnels; another wall, this time sloped and slick, but with a rope to hold on to; and at the end a fire to vault over! Wow, I was overwhelmed, thats just the end – how would it be during the run?

Shortly before 4pm I went to the starting area for the warm-up. After some „Who are you“ – „Spartans“ -shouts we started to run. I didn’t feel fit at all and really was worried if I would make it to the finish line. After a few meters we had to run over a mud hill and through a goit, so my shoes were wet and muddy (and heavy!) already by then. The course went over a wood wall, which I climbed surprisingly easy, then through a wood and to a large swimming pool. A jump in the cold water and swimming about 10-15m (I’m not good at estimating) – after that I was wide awake, stimulated and ready for everything! The ones who know me know, that I normally go in water slowly, this jump really cost me some effort.

The „sprint“ was lots of fast walking in the end – not only for me, but for everyone around me. We all saved our strength for the obstacles and sometimes running just wasn’t possible – mud, slippery, steep forest floor, going through a cold stream (Kneipp cure for free ;-)). Or we had to carry something, large sand bags, buckets filled with stones (filled by ourselves of course)…walking was hard enough then.

During the run I didn’t really think about the duration or the length, I just went from obstacle to obstacle and was happy as hell that I had to make the first burpees very late in the race. I even conquered the monkey bars (metal bars where you have to go from one to the other hanging, like at the playground) without a problem. Only at the spear throwing I joined about 90% of the racers and did my burpees, completely out of breath.

Also nochmal Burpees, was schon unglaublich schwer war!!
Shortly before the finish line I got a motivation boost: I knew it won’t be long now! Only a few more obstacles which I conquered carried by the encouragement of the audience. The hardest for me was crawling through mud, below the barbwire. It was very energy-sapping after all I had done before already. Respect to everyone at the army 😉 But I did it, although I was very slow. The next one was the rope climbing, where I was so proud to make it halfway up, only to slip down – I was full of mud and there was no possibility to wipe it away. So burpees again, which was very hard at this moment!

Then it was over the rope net, the mud wall and through goits. The mud walls were extremely slippery already and it was very hard to come up from the goits. The last wood wall with the rope was the last real obstacle – my shoes were already really slippery, the wall was too, and it took me a lot of strength to myself up with my arms. Shortly before the highest point I was on my knees and didn’t know how to pull myself up on the top. Now the mental side really came into play, I closed my eyes for a moment, took a deep breath and told myself that I can do it. The alternative would have been 30 burpees, and I really didn’t want to do them 😉 So I grabbed over the top on the other side of the wall and a moment later I was on the other side. A little pep talk can do wonders!

I didn’t feel like running at all anymore but the happy face on the other side of the finish line really motivated me. So I jumped over the fire and ran over the finish line. I was so incredibly happy and proud, I can’t describe the feeling! It was so great and I want to do it again!!

For me such an obstacle course has little to do with a „normal“ run, its very strenuous and demanding in its own way. The monotony of the run is interrupted by the obstacles, which I loved!! This was not my last obstacle race for sure, I’m already looking forward to do such events with Oliver (provided he likes it of course ;-))

spartan race finished fitundgluecklich

I wanted to also tell you what I learned and what I would do differently the next time – but I’ll do that another time. I’ll also show you how to prepare for such a race, now that I know what was good and what I would change.

Seid ihr schon mal einen Gatschlauf gelaufen? Wie war es? Würdet ihr es wieder tun?
Did you ever run an obstacle course? How was it? Would you do it again?
