{Baby} Stoffwindel FAQs / Cloth diapers FAQs

I wrote about our experiences after 6 months, and I promised you some more FAQs, so here they are!! We are now using the cloth diapers already three months longer and still like them. Max got used to them too and uses them more now.

Wie läuft das Waschen der Stoffwindeln? / How do you wash cloth diapers?

Our changing place is on the washing machine (I showed it here, including the DIY mobile), which is really practical. The disposable fleece comes in the toilet (thats really great since his stool is harder, it wasn’t that good with the runny newborn stool), and the diapers in the washing machine. Door closed and at night I rinse the diapers (my machine has an extra program for that, about 15 minutes long). When everything is rinsed well I fill the machine up with my other laundry (although I don’t wash the bibs for eating with the diapers, although they are rinsed, I just think it would be kind of disgusting) and wash (with little washing powder)

The diapers dry relatively fast, usually they need just a day.

Stinken Stoffwindeln nicht mit der Zeit? / Don’t cloth diapers smell after a while?

When you do everything right when washing them they are not supposed to stink. If they do smell like urine after a while you didn’t rinse them well enough. Do they smell moldy or rotten bacteria has grown (probably you didn’t dry them well enough). Disinfect them (best with oxygen bleaching) and washed hot a few times. We didn’t have this problem (yet), but I’ve read quite a few reports and pay more attention to washing them the right way and letting them dry long enough since then (the rinsing etc).

Wie viele Stoffwindeln benötige ich? / How many cloth diapers do I need?

That depends a lot on how you are using them, and if your baby is wetting a lot. Oliver goes to the potty already too (I wrote a bit about that here), so we are saving some diapers. As you have to dry the diapers well (see the part about smell) I bought more than suggested. We have 20 diapers, but we don’t use them exclusively (at night and out of the house we are using disposable diapers). Thats enough for us, and I even think using them exclusively would be possible with this number (although I think I would buy some more, just to be sure)

Doesn’t the baby get a diaper rash when it sits in a wet diaper for so long?

That was one of my greatest concerns, especially as we are mixing with disposable diapers. So his butt has to face different conditions a lot, as disposables don’t get wet (they transform the fluid into a gel) and cloth diapers get wet a lot (although they absorb a lot of fluid too, but they don’t transform it, its still wet. Until now it went great, we don’t use creams or anything. In case of a red butt (like when we are eating lots of citrus fruits) I’m using healing wool (thats very fat wool which still has lanolin in it, thats the same substance thats in these nipple creams), and that works well every time. Its important to let the butt dry completely before putting on a new diaper. (Store bought baby wipes also can irritate the skin, but we have no experience with that too. But I know some people who make their own wipes or just use water)

Stoffwindeln machen viel mehr Arbeit als Wegwerfwindeln / Cloth diapers are very work intense

I hear that a lot, but I really don’t feel they do. First you don’t have to go buy them, and don’t have to think about buying new ones when one package is nearly empty (I know, there are diaper subscriptions, but not everyone has them). You have them always at  home. And you don’t have to empty the garbage can that often and it doesn’t stink that much, as you put the disposable fleece in the toilet and nothing in the garbage. Washing them is not a big deal, you do laundry anyway and a few diapers don’t make that much of a difference. And you don’t have any work besides that, if you take them directly from the drying rack you don’t even have to take them down all at once. So I really don’t have the feeling that I have a lot of work with them.

Was verwendet ihr für Windeln? Habt ihr Erfahrungen mit Stoffwindeln?
Which diapers do you use? Do you have experiences with cloth diapers?
